According to the magazine (which polled a panel of 38 health experts to come up with its rankings), the DASH diet was crafted by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute with the goal of lowering high blood pressure with foods high in potassium, calcium, protein, and fiber. And on the "no" list are foods high in sodium and fat.
Even though it's branded as a new diet, the guidelines are really things that have been advised for decades: eat fruits and veggies, lean protein, and legumes, and limit processed food and sugar. Not exactly revolutionary.

Wondering what else made the list? The Mediterranean Diet ranked second, and the MIND Diet—a blend of the DASH and Mediterranean diets—(again, huh?) came in at number three. If anything, the list shows that while buzzy terms for new eating plans will score headlines year after year, in the end, filling up on fruits, veggies, and protein never goes out of style.
