Whether or not you buy into the idea that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, experts agree that eating a healthy meal in the AM can help you lose weight and even curb cravings all day long. And without a doubt, one of the easiest -- and most customizable -- breakfast options around is toast.

One thing to remember? Make sure to choose a bread that packs in a lot of fiber naturally (think whole wheat, whole grain, sprouted grain), as opposed to white bread or breads with added fibers, says Jessica Cording, MS, RD, CDN. "Toppings with protein and healthy fats, when combined with the complex carbs in the bread, will give you slow-burning energy to keep you going all morning," she adds.

Sound good to you? Us too. That’s why we've rounded up 10 breakfast toast recipes that run the gamut from sweet to savory and simple to brunch-worthy.

Cream Cheese, Peach, Honey Toast

Those of us with a sweet tooth will appreciate this variation, which also packs in some nutrient-rich fruit. But if you’re looking for more protein, Cording recommends subbing out the cream cheese for some part-skim ricotta, Greek yogurt, or even cottage cheese.

Cording calls this one classic brain food. "The protein and healthy fats will keep you energized and satisfied for hours," she adds. Bonus: Avocado and egg are both great for fighting bloat, she says, so this one's perfect for a Monday morning when you want to get back on track after an indulgent weekend.

There’s a reason peanut butter and banana is a popular snack -- it’s delicious and keeps you full till lunchtime. This toasty variation adds a drizzle of honey for some sweetness. "Just be mindful of portion size," Cording cautions. "Stick to a small banana or half a large. You can always eat the other half later if you get hungry mid-morning."

Salmon, Egg, and Cream Cheese Toast from Jelly Toast

This brunch-worthy option is another protein powerhouse. Plus, salmon and eggs are loaded with brain- and heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. "Just be mindful of the sodium and saturated fat content in the salmon and cream cheese," Cording cautions. If it's not a cheat day, you can sub in some Greek yogurt for the cream cheese to increase protein and calcium without sacrificing flavor.

Avocado, Hummus, Tomatoes, and Hemp Toast from Oh She Glows

Avocado, Hummus, Tomato, Hemp Toast

This "vegan delight" packs in three great sources of fiber -- avocado, hummus, tomatoes -- in one toast. Hemp seeds serve up all the veggie protein you'll need in the a.m., since one 55-calorie tablespoon clocks in at 3 grams, says Cording.

This cool summer option is not just refreshing, but the combination of fat and fiber in the hummus (plus the water-rich cucumbers) means it's as satisfying as any other. Throw in an egg or some hemp seeds for added protein, Cording suggests.

Fuel your day with some green veggies, like those found in this option. The egg, Cording says, is a great source of protein, and the omegas in it will help you stay energized and focused.
