More: You'll Never Believe How Many People Are Having Sex At Your Gym
The company collected samples from 27 different pieces of equipment at three different gyms to really find out the worst offenders and the nastiest surfaces you're touching during your routine. And with more than one million bacteria per square inch, the treadmill, exercise bike, and the free weights were the most disgusting places at your gym. Take a look at this inforgraphic, and prepare to cringe, because according to the report, the treadmill has just about 362 times more bacteria than a toilet seat. That's right. Than a toilet seat.
But according to experts, disinfecting your gym equipment isn't just a friendly thing to do—it's a necessity.
"Be sure to disinfect machines both before and after you use them, never walk around barefoot, don't touch your face, and always wash your hands and change out of your gym clothes immediately after a workout," the authors say in the report, because according to their findings, approximately 70 percent of the bacteria are potentially harmful to humans.
Terrified yet? Maybe it's time to start investing in your at-home gym. Maybe.
